While contemporary folk music is a more recent development from the United States, traditional folk music can be found all over the world. He made it his mission to bring these songs to the masses, because in those days the songs would have otherwise been lost. He found work on radio stations KOAI and KTSA in San Antonio, Texas in the late 1940s. He also came close to heading the department of music at the National Museum.
