Different philosophers divide these fields in different ways. Gert offers the following explicit definition of morality: Morality is an informal public system applying to all rational persons, governing behavior that affects others, and has the lessening of evil or harm as its goal. Philosophy of science and medicine, professional and applied ethics. An egoistic aestheticism which is not a moral aestheticism would simply mean that goods for the self are worthy of pursuit; and that is not a moral fallacy. But an a posteriori method seems ill-suited to discovering and establishing what we must do whether we feel like doing it or not; surely such a method could only tell us what we actually do. Note here that fear is not innately contrary to reason. This is because ethics and morality is not something that the common person thinks about often.

So, ethics is not a means to the highest ideal of human life. Many decisions we make have moral importance: often, its just a matter of recognizing that fact. If any non-situationist practical judgement introduces a view about reasons, then it seems somewhat unreasonable to suggest that the person making that judgement should steer clear of any thought about how the reason she’s advocating stacks up against other reasons for acting, and what those reasons might be.

That is in fact the phenomenal world where our goals are naturally those of happiness or other mundane works. This is not the "social gospel," but it is the gospel with real social and moral emphasis. Characteristically, virtue ethics makes a claim about the central role of virtue and character in its understanding of moral life and uses it to answer the questions "How should I live? I would keep God out of a search for ethical knowledge and understanding. Note here that fear is not innately contrary to reason.

Nietzsche seems especially prescient of twentieth century trends in literature in stating that man has a need for some will, some goal, even the will for nothingness--a statement that seems to anticipate existentialism, and the literature of the absurd, as much as it is a critique of nineteenth century nihilism. Our schools teach that we are an accident of evolution.

What are the key elements of a proper Ethics? The underpinning for decent human conduct must be a consistent and easily understood code of morality.

That way of stating the acceptability of civil disobedience is not quite correct, however, for it does not justify, say, allowing people to speed through residential neighborhoods in fast cars just because they are willing and able to pay speeding fines. In other words, business ethics is concerned with whether or not a business and, by extension, its owner, should be seen as a benefactor of the public. You have not properly consulted if you merely seek and obtain confirmation from a tame advisor.

It's not good enough for you merely to get the general idea of somebody else's position or argument. Now, the circumstances can clearly make a great deal of difference in estimating the justice or injustice of such procedures as these; and these circumstances may sometimes include expected consequences; for example, a man's claim to a bit of property can become a nullity when its seizure and use can avert some obvious disaster: as, e.g., if you could use a machine of his to produce an explosion in which it would be destroyed, but by means of which you could divert a flood or make a gap which a fire could not jump.

Attention to our sense of self and to the existential demands and difficulties of the ethical life have usually not been the focus of moral philosophy. In his book, Jesus of Nazareth, he hurls his blasphemous indictments against our Lord. In this problem we will first inquire whether the mere conception of a categorical imperative may not perhaps supply us also with the formula of it, containing the proposition which alone can be a categorical imperative; for even if we know the tenor of such absolute command, yet how it is possible will require further special and laborious study, which we postpone to the last section.
